Power Dynamics in Transformative Social Innovation

Cases

The main question that drives our research is How can people transform power relations towards more just, sustainable and/or democratic futures and how might we* further enable that?” We thereby focus on social innovation initiatives and networks across the Netherlands, Portugal, and the United Kingdom along three main empirical categories:

  • Democratic experimentation: broad set of movements/networks/initiatives experimenting with alternative forms of democracy, such as deep democracy, citizen assemblies, participatory budgeting, and deep canvassing.
  • Place-based prefiguration: broad set of movements/networks/initiatives that explicitly create alternative socio-material places and practices towards more justice and sustainability, such as co-housing, eco-communities, regional initiatives, and decentralised energy.
  • Power literacy: how people across movements/networks/initiatives experience, sense, and develop power literacy (see our Quest on power literacy for more information).
